It was a first for Middletown: a Mardi Gras parade, complete with Anne Cubberly’s Giant Puppets, above, and a seven-piece Dixieland band, assembling at Holy Trinity and winding up at First Church. The event was covered live by WSFB Channel 3 News, top. Proceeds went to the St. Vincent DePaul soup kitchen.

Mardi Gras evolved from ancient pagan festivals in the Roman world that marked the transition from winter to spring and involved feasting and revelry. Church authorities adapted such festivals into the liturgical calendar instead of abolishing them, turning them into part of the period of celebration before Lent. The name “Mardi Gras” is French for “Fat Tuesday” and refers to the custom of consuming rich, fatty foods before the Lenten fast.
